Obstetrics and the Newborn

Obstetrics is a specialty relating to pregnancy,  delivery of the foetus and placenta,  and aftercare of the mother and the newborn infant,  the latter frequently in association with other practitioners (e.g. paediatricians).

With advances in knowledge,  maternal deaths and injury are becoming very uncommon.  As a consequence, there have not been a large number of mishaps reported in the MDU Annual Reports in recent years.  For this reason,  this chapter is not as replete with case studies as are some others.
