Orthopaedics - Miscellaneous Cases

Arthroscopy

In this investigation a viewing instrument is inserted through a small opening made into the joint enabling accurate assessment of damage to the soft tissue structures of the joint.

Operative arthroscopy is now also frequently undertaken.  In suitable cases, damaged menisci may now be removed arthroscopically, with a great reduction in recovery time as the amount of trauma to the joint is greatly reduced.

Case 368.1

During arthroscopic removal of a torn meniscus, the capsule of the knee joint was penetrated and the common peroneal nerve [also known as the lateral popliteal nerve] was damaged.  The claim was settled.

Case 368.2

Following arthroscopic surgery performed on a professional basketball player, the knee joint became infected.  There was delay in treatment and the knee joint was severely damaged making a return to a financially rewarding career impossible.
