Chapter 11
Surgery of the Abdomen
Although urology and gynaecology are now specialties quite distinct from surgery of the gastro-intestinal tract, the difficulties and complications which arise from surgery can conveniently be dealt with in a single chapter. The surgery all takes place in the same body cavity and the same organs are at risk, though some more than others, of course, in particular cases. Thus, one would not expect inadvertent injury to the biliary system during a gynaecological operation, but injuries to the ureter, for example, can occur during all three types of surgery mentioned above.
Claims for negligence from inappropriate medical treatment, is dealt with in other chapters, most notably chapters 2 and 3. The present chapter will concern itself only with mishaps arising from abdominal surgical misdiagnosis and treatment. Claims associated with male and female sterilisations are dealt with separately in Chapter 17.
