Chapter 10

Eyes and ENT

The Eye

There are a vast number of conditions of the eye which may lead to serious visual impairment.  Many may be mismanaged.  Clearly it is impossible to do more than give a few illustrative examples with a little accompanying explanation.

The cornea

The cornea is the transparent part of the eye at the front of the eyeball.  It joins the sclera along a circular line called the limbus.  The cornea is responsible for most of the refraction of light reaching the eye.  It is composed of five distinct layers together with nerve fibres. They are, unless diseased or injured, transparent to light.  There are no blood vessels in the normal cornea.

Injury to cornea

Most injuries to the cornea heal without scarring.  When severe scarring does occur, corneal grafting may be necessary.
