The nervous system consists of three connected parts:
. The central nervous system which comprises the brain and the spinal cord;
. The peripheral nerves issuing from these.
. The autonomic nervous system.
Although loss of function of parts of the autonomic nervous system can be tolerated, often with little visible effect, loss of function of major portions of the other two parts of the nervous system lead to crippling disability. It is hardly surprising, then, that patients who feel that negligence has contributed to their disability will be inclined to seek legal redress.
